A black monolith is discovered on the moon. A lunar base is built around it to research it. When researchers try to take a picture of it, it emits a piercing signal. Than a second is discovered near Jupiter. The U.S.S. Discovery is sent to research this new monolith. The supercomputer controlling the ship, HAL 9000, goes berserk.
